Profile
- Dr. Kohei Okumura is a Japanese patent attorney.
- He belonged to the Department of Applied Physics, Faculty of Science and Engineering, Waseda University, where he studied the basics of physics as a natural science. For his graduation research, he worked on a microscope for non-destructive observation of the quality of devices that convert the wavelength of light in Nakajima laboratory.
- After graduation, he enrolled in Graduate School of Information Science and Technology, the University of Tokyo where he received his Ph.D. (Information Science and Technology) in Ishikawa laboratory for research on high-speed optical axis control. He was also selected as JSPS Fellow (DC2), which provides financial support to a limited number of doctoral students. While in school, he received the Robotics Society of Japan Journal Paper Award, the Society of Instrument and Control Engineers Paper Award (Hasunuma Award), the Society of Instrument and Control Engineers Measurement Paper Award, the Advanced Robotics Best Paper Award, the Robotics Society of Japan, and many other academic awards.
- After that, he aspired to be a researcher for a while, but realized that the best field for him to work in was the one where he could leave technical results in writing rather than the research itself, so he changed his mind from being a university researcher to working for a patent firm. While working at both a major patent firm and a small to medium-sized patent firm, he was involved in the prosecution of many cases involving both large and small companies. While at the firm, he also obtained his patent attorney license. He is particularly trusted by clients in the fields of robot control, image processing, and medical devices, which require a high level of expertise.
- Currently, he is in a position to organize IPX together with Oshitani, and is mainly engaged in quality control, training of new employees, and system development based on VBA. However, he is still involved as a practitioner in many university research institutes and university-launched venture companies. Since a former university researcher, he is also interested in education, and is currently a facilitator of practical courses such as specification preparation and OA correspondence at the IP prep school run by Chizaijuku Co.
- He is interested in languages and programming, and he is multi-lingual in Japanese, English and Korean. For example, he is good at interviewing inventors in English, understanding their contents, and translating them into specifications. He is also one of the few Japanese patent attorneys who can communicate with Korean agents in Korean at an intermediate to advanced level. He is one of the most well-known patent attorneys in Japan for the development of practical support programs, and in addition to patenting his own systems, he often conducts seminars for patent attorneys in his office to promote the development of the industry.
