Comment

My work centers on trademarks and extends to protecting a brand as a whole, together with designs and copyright.

I care about more than obtaining individual rights: I look at the business and the brand as a whole and think about how trademarks, designs and copyright can be combined to protect them. Having played in bands since my student days, I take a particular interest in the work of creators and of people who bring new things into the world.

I aim to make practical proposals, so that intellectual property works as a framework that lets you keep running your business and creating with confidence.

Detailed profile

Specializing in trademarks, he has handled more than 2,500 cases. Beyond office action responses and appeals against final rejections, his work covers negotiations with holders of prior rights, inter partes trials and litigation. He is strong at proposals that look ahead from pre-filing strategy to enforcement. He has filed foreign trademark applications in more than 50 countries.

In design prosecution he proposes filing strategies that protect a product design from several angles, making use of the related design system and designs for sets of articles.

He has hands-on experience of copyright registration in Japan and in China, and has worked on brand protection that combines trademarks, designs and copyright.

He has played in bands since his student days. Because he is also on the side of those who create, he belongs to a pro bono group supporting creators, helping to build an environment where creators' rights are properly protected and they can create with peace of mind.
